all of the above
10.) A gear is a toothed wheel, cylilnder, or cone that transmits motion from one part of a machine to another; it is one of the oldest means of ___________.
lifting heavy objects
transmitting motion
separating two objects from each other
11.) What invention revolutionized the study of the sky?

  • Paul:

Not all of these are chemistry questions, but I’ll give it a shot.

    1) The moon is tidally locked to the Earth, meaning that it rotates once on its axis for every revolution around the Earth.
    2) The moon takes roughly 28 days to orbit earth (it’s more like 27.5 days).
    3) The dark features on the moon’s surface are maria, or basins of solidified rock.
    4) An eclipse is caused by the relative locations of the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth. For an eclipse to occur, the three bodies must be perfectly aligned.
    5) The moon both stabilizes the Earth’s rotation about its axis and causes the oceanic tides.
    6) True. Many of the larger craters and maria are visible without a telescope (i.e. the famous “man in the moon”)
    7) All of the above. 8) A pulley is, in essence, a rotating lever.
    9) Flag poles, ski lifts, and tow trucks all use pulley systems.
    10) Gears transfer motion from one area to another, and are one of the oldest ways of doing so.
    11) The telescope revolutionized the study of the sky.
    12) Scientists rely on models to help explain the atom and its properties.
    13) Scientists can use spectrometers to determine how fast objects are moving in space (via redshift).
    14) The sun is considerably more dense than the Earth, especially in the solar core.
    15) Radiation from the sun’s core is continuously absorbed and re-emitted by the gasses in the star, causing the energy of the released photons to be greatly decreased into the visible range.
    16) No other planets other than Earth are confirmed to sustain life.
    17) The “Charge Cloud” model describes the nature of electrons in an atom.
    18) Matter is made of tiny molecules in continuous motion.
    19) The electron was discovered by J. J. Thomson in 1897, predating the discovery of the proton by 22 years and the discovery of the neutron by 35 years.
    20) Water is the product of the reaction between 2 hydrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule.

    I hope this helped!
